Oatmeal Raisin Cookies in the Bible

Hot Oatmeal Raisin Cookies fresh from the oven… did you know they are mentioned in the Bible? They are.  Baking them always makes me chuckle as I remember the lesson God taught me a few years back…

On another Sunday afternoon, I had baked a quadruple batch of my husband Don’s favorite cookies, oatmeal raisin.  Of course they were all for him. Such true love!

On Monday morning I took four Texas size cookies to work and tucked them away in my top desk drawer to slowly savor over the next several days.  But by 2 pm I reached my hand in the drawer for just a bite of cookie and discovered that all four cookies had disappeared! I had mindlessly eaten them without even noticing.  I was hoping that God hadn’t noticed either, for He had been gently speaking to me about my problem with overeating and going to food for comfort and satisfaction instead of Him.

The next morning, I opened the One Year Bible to the passage for the day, in the obscure four page Old Testament book of Hosea. I read, “For the Lord loves his people although they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes.”

Ouch, that hurt.  God was gently pointing out how I, too, was worshiping food and turning to sacred raisin cakes rather than Him for my comfort, even if we called them oatmeal raison cookies.  Whoa!

I responded, “Lord, I’m glad you love me, one of your people. Help me not to continually turn to other gods like oatmeal raisin cookies to try to find satisfaction. Help me turn to you instead because you truly satisfies me. And God, I love your sense of humor! Amen.”
